Little known fact….when silver salmon first show up from the Gulf of Alaska in July they all weigh around 5-6lbs but by the time they hit the rivers they can push 20lbs. That means they can put on 2lbs a week!!! When we are targeting them we seem to release between 60-90% no matter where we go because they are too small. Lots of Lings in the 33-34.75” range this year so hopefully 2023 will produce more legal Ling Cod. However, like all of the biggest Lings I have ever seen caught, The big ones come as “hitchhikers” grabbing onto either a rockfish, salmon or halibut thats already hooked. The suns is out from 4am til 11pm by the end of the month yet we can still get the occassional dusting of snow before Memorial day. This May has been somewhat typical in that the big spawning events are driving fish behavior. Herring, Hooligan, Pacific Cod and sticklebacks. Here is Chris Kern with a nice Mother’s Day King Salmon we caught on the edge of the great Kelp Forest just south of Anchor Point AK while sitting on anchor mostly targeting halibut. When conditions allow, we always like to keep one line out with a troll herring far behind the boat usually under a bobber and let the rushing current give action to the bait. As you can see from the photo it can be effective on Kings. Fighting a big king in strong current on the anchor can be quiet an experience! When you hook a halibut in water this shallow, it will run all over the place. This girl was so Awnry that we had to leave the anchor behind to go get her. Hooked on a little 8oz Grub with spinning gear this fish took nearly 50mins to land. Notice the clear blue sky in the background. WINTER (Oct-April 30th) - Fishing - Winter is the season of King Salmon and Tanner Crab. As far as food fish go, there is nothing better to eat in the ocean than a bright fresh winter king salmon. These are the primary target in what is affectionately called “the off season” 60% of the clients we take out during the winter are Alaskan residents though we are getting more and more non-residents every year. The other bonus is that the local tanner crab (Snow Crab) fishery is open from October 1st until March 15th and each angler is allowed 3 tanner crab per person per day. If you were hoping for snow crab they are only available in winter. The rivers are all iced up by November’s end and breakup is typically mid to late April. Ice Fishing is your main freshwater option. Winter winds can make fishing in Kachemak bay, “confining” however a good heater can keep everyone warm in the coldest conditions. Halibut fishing is typically slow and closed in the month of January anyways, All sexually mature halibut leave the shallow waters of Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet for the big spawning events on the edge of the shelf way out in the Gulf of Alaska. Rockfish can be caught on the south side of Kachemak Bay in winter though they are often sluggish. Winter Kings though can warm up any angler. The fishery was shut down for nearly 30years and reopened in 2019 for 3 crab per permit holder per day and 12 crab for the year. Ling Cod are one of the most interesting fish in Alaskan waters. They are super aggressive. They often hit a lure with so much power it will jerk the rod out of an unsuspecting fisherman’s hands. Many west coast states boast ling cod fisheries but 9 out of the 10 largest Lings ever caught were caught right here in Homer. Lings can be tricky. They live in very rocky structure so there is always the risk of loosing tackle when targeting them nearly half of all the largest Ling Cod that have been pulled aboard the Obsession, were “hitchhikers” a ling that grabs a hooked rockfish or halibut. These prehistoric looking sea monsters have been seen well over 80lbs in the Homer Area. They must be 35” long in order to keep. For those who have never fished for these voracious fish, brace yourself this will be something you never forget. It is very common to catch a limit of rockfish for the entire boat in 20mins or less. “Drop down hook a fish (or two) reel them in repeat”. It is also very common to hook other species while fishing for Rocks. Most of the time the first halibut, salmon and lingcod of the day bite while targeting rockfish. Halibut can be found all over the place in depths ranging from 10ft to 1000ft but we try and keep it in 300 or less. We will likely drop anchor near a tidal surge area or kelp forest and bring the halibut to us using the scent of freshly cut bait. Halibut fishing can be a workout especially if you hook into a beast. We catch halibut with a variety of gear types, depending on your skill level you may use jigs, fresh dead herring, octopus or even salmon carcasses for bait. The sassiest of all Alaskan fish. Salmon fishing is typically done one of two ways. Either trolling with downriggers or mooching. When trolling we set 3 or 4 lines at various depths and use the boat to “troll” and once the salmon strikes the bait, it is you vs. the fish. King Salmon have huge “Gas Tanks” and often fight for 15-30mins or more. General rule of thumb is one minute per pound with kings. (Record on Captain Travis’s boat is 75minutes for a 64lb giant) Trolling is a great way to see the country. Whales and birds are often very close to where salmon are biting. When the Silver Salmon are in (typically 2nd week of July), we start to “mooch” for salmon more than troll. Its very similar to jigging for rockfish but with slightly different gear. Everyone holds their own rod, they feel the strike and set the hook. This can be utter chaos with 6 salmon on simultaneously spoiling everyone forever. This is a style of drift fishing typically done in areas with high concentrations of bait fish. In our area you can see 4 active volcanoes, the Harding Ice Field, dozens of fjords, glaciers, uninhabited islands, sheer sea cliffs and a huge variety of unique Alaskan scenery. Your fish will either be laid out on the boat or will be hung up at the dock for an end of day total catch photo, then we fillet your fish and send them to the local processors to be vacuum packed and frozen. These Cakes should be 90-95% Crab, We just want enough of the other stuff in there to hold them together. 4) Form into patties by hand and place on a parchment lined baking tray in Freezer and chill for 20 min 5) In a large skillet heat 1/4-1/8” of Cooking Fat on Medium Heat. This fish has many names, however we would describe them with just two words. Abundant and tasty. Pacific Cod have a sine wave cycle of abundance here in the Kachemak Bay/Southern Cook Inlet area. Up until a few years ago these fish were considered pests when halibut fishing and rather than being saved for the freezer they were cut and used for bait. However enough fishermen from the east coast made a trek up here to Alaska and knew right away that to use these fish only for bait was a waste. These fish are nearly identical to the cod from the famous Grand Banks off of Cape Cod. So much of the north Atlantic was explored by fishermen looking for cod. The cod here are just as tasty and we have WAY more than any place on the east coast of North America. Cod have a lot more fat in their flesh than halibut (Omega 3 fatty acids) and there are no limits for sport caught cod in Alaska. In other words we will box as many as you’d like to take home as long as they keep biting we will keep them. These fish are just as delicious and versatile as halibut. Most cod are caught while fishing halibut especially in the spring however if you are interested in making a big Cod haul let Captain Travis know.
